The project gave the opportunity to work with a great site and an interesting program. Our team chose to take advantage of both conditions. To maximize the value of the site, the building was oriented to have large open views towards the East and South East, directly facing Geographe Bay. The main spaces of each residence were given priority towards the ocean view; including living spaces, bedrooms and decks. Additionally, the design extends the livable space of the house towards the outdoors, taking advantage of the great weather that the region experiences for large portions of the year. Rooftop decks and balconies provide for different vantage points of the incredible surroundings, while outdoor living spaces act as extensions of the ground level spaces.
Rather than breaking up the program into separate buildings, the design team desired to create a single building where each space was connected by the shared outdoor spaces. By doing this, it allowed the house to be quite flexible in its use. Each element could act as its own private space in the case that both houses were being rented by people that didn't know each other, but could also easily accommodate larger parties of people that wanted to spend larger amounts of time together. Furthermore, it allowed for the project to act as a single unit, if the client were to decide to make this their own residence, or if they were to sell the house it the future, House A could seamlessly become a guest house for a fully functioning House B.
The design of the project desired to create simple and elegant spaces. Large open great rooms in both houses allow for activity and conversation to spill from one space to another uninterrupted. Furthermore, large openings allow for the boundary between inside and outside to be completely erased; with the use of Nana Walls and hydraulic rotating windows, the outdoor decks become an extension of the great rooms. A threshold is created by the separation in level between the public activities of the ground level and the private activities of the second floor (bedrooms and office space).
