The project consists on remodeling the existing fireplace in the main living area into a modern look fireplace, where will be placed a 55" TV. The main concern of the client is positioning the TV as close to the fireplace as possible so as not to look up for extended periods of time. In this regard, the proposed design attempts to provide a warm looking fireplace, with comfortable TV height. The proposed design of the fireplace is developed in two options. Both options do not have interventions in the existing structure of the fireplace (to reduce construction fees), they present the same design structure but differing only from the wall finishes.
First, all the TV devices such as AV receiver, PlayStation, cable box, DVD etc. will be hidden in order to free and give a clear look to the fireplace. This components can be placed in the white shelf on the right of the fireplace or in a rack inside of a near by closet and can be played through an IR emitters/repeater. This device transports the signal from the remote to the other components by not using wires.
Second, the 55" TV is placed in a distance of 14" above from the fireplace. In order to minimize the heat exposure, 9" above the fireplace is installed a 10" wide shelf/mantel heat hood that will help to deflect heat from the wall. For more secure reasons this mantle can be painted with pot-belly black spray-paint, a paint designed to take extreme heat without flaking off.
Third, the place used for storing woods is converted into a nice shelf for placing decorative objects.
To avoid the neck strains, the TV is positioned as low as possible, actually 51" from the floor. The TV is installed in the wall with a motion mount that allows setting the pivot in a comfortable angle.
Finally, the modern look is given by refinishing the existing bricks of the fireplace. The materials chosen for finishing the fireplace are durable and aesthetic materials. Two options are given. The first option consists of retreading the entire fireplace with a grey-silver ledgestone. While the second option combines the traditional with the modern look fireplace by using two materials that differ the gas fireplace zone from the TV zone as shown in the Fig.2. For the fireplace zone is used also the grey-silver ledgestone. While for the upper part is used Oyster Mushroom 6185-52 Sico paint, as the perfect warm, smoky, grey paint color that matches with the existing living room furnitures, gives contrast to the white wall and combines perfectly with the ledgestone color.
