Our goal is to create a cohesive stylish and comfortable great room. This section of our house is the heart of the home for our family of four and we are ready to have a space we enjoy looking at as well as being in. We use the space for homework, movie night, board games. The kitchen is used frequently as we cook daily for ourselves and often for guests (there is a separate dining room). Our home is a mid century deck house located atop a hill in the woods and the extensive windows are designed to connect the space with the outside. Our personal style is consistent with the midcentury/modern aesthetic of our architecture. Currently, the area is functional, but contains a hodgepodge collection of furniture and finishes that we have inherited that does not fit the space very well nor does it coordinate.
In the family room area we want to put a new face on the brick chimney, replace the built ins, allowing for a thin two person desk facing the wall next to the chimney (space for two kids to do homework on computers) and the TV/media area switched to the other side of the room (where the desk currently sits). The game table would be in the desk/fireplace side of the room and then a new sofa will face the TV/Media area on the other side of the room. In the kitchen, we want to refinish the original cabinets, probably including new doors and hardware (the cabinets themselves are solid mahogany but the doors are a veneer and have worn out after 47 years). We also want to update the appliances to stainless (the fridge is already new but dishwasher, ovens and range are from the '80s). Throughout the space, we want a new floor, new lighting and possibly window treatments. As noted above, we need a new layout and furniture for lounging and visiting in the media area. We are not planning to change the wood ceiling but open to considering something different there. In our current space we plan on keeping a 42 inch round table with Eames chairs as well as our espresso countertop stools, fridge and blue pearl granite counters. The fireplace insert is a functional pellet stove and also needs to stay. Our kids are finally old enough that we do not plan on having the safety gate surrounding it after the renovation.
We would like a uniform floor throughout the space, probably hardwood. Area rugs can be used in the family room area. We want to design this space to last for a long time, so we want high quality materials. We also want it to be family friendly and welcoming. We are admiring the Stressless Sofas (http://www.ekornes.com/us/stressless-sofas) because of their comfort in conjunction with their clean lines (we like the low backed Space model). The winning submission will be beautiful. Our new game table and chairs will fit in, but there will be a feature wall or something of design interest in the room maybe a new finish instead of the brick on the fireplace. There will be a good color scheme and the area will be comfortable for entertaining as well as an evening home with our family of four. There will be enough storage for some of our board games, enough open space for playing Wii. The winning entry will provide enough details that we can execute it in conjunction with a contractor. Basic drawings for the built ins are sufficient, but the colors, finishes, furniture and accessories need to have enough detail so that we are able to purchase it and have it delivered to Concord, MA.
