Our project is to furnish and decorate a room that is to the left of the front entry to our home that has doorways that lead to our kitchen and to our family room. Our goal is to be able to use this room as an entertaining space. We would like to have an easy flow between this room, the kitchen and the family room. We envision something along the lines of an adult lounge where people hang out, mingle, and where they can be served and enjoy refreshments.
The room is 16ft x 12ft and is situated on the front of the house.
One wall has two built-in book cases that run all the way up to the ceiling. On the top shelf of each book case there is wiring for speakers that are connected to our sound system. These book cases and shelves are made of plywood and painted white. The doors in particular need to be replaced.
There are two recessed lights above each book case that are on dimmers and are aimed at the shelves. There is also a ceiling light in the center of the room and the ceilings are 8 ft high.
All the trim in the home is white and there are red oak hardwood floors in all rooms. Other than the book case doors, everything in this room is in great condition.
The décor in our home is transitional/contemporary. The colors in the nearby rooms are earthy - the kitchen is painted Sherwin Williams chinchilla and has maple cabinetry. The family room is a neutral tan with one deep blue accent wall with neutral stone tile that runs from floor to ceiling where the fireplace and TV are located. The entry walls are painted a medium yellow, but they need repainting so we will probably change this color as well and would welcome any color suggestions.
What We Like:
We would like this room to be somewhat sophisticated, but not formal. We like clean lines and simplicity.
We would like some seating, and if possible would like the design to incorporate the two chairs we have included in our photos, however this is not mandatory and should not compromise the design.
We like the idea of perhaps a long, bar height table or shelf with cool bar stools – examples are included in our photos.
What We Don’t Want:
The furnishings should not restrict the flow into the room from the front entry, or between this room and the other rooms.
We do not want a dining table with chairs in this room because we already have an eat-in kitchen and a separate, formal dining room.
We are open to making any modifications to the book cases or other elements of the room, but do not want to make any changes that would require repairs to the hardwood floors and/or ceiling.
The TV in the family room is visible from this room, so we do not require a separate TV in this room.
We would prefer not to use wallpaper.
We would like to obtain designs for all aspects of the décor including what to do with the book cases as well as what to get for furniture, rug, window treatments, paint colors and any accents.
We would like designers to provide details including specific manufacturers, fabrics, and colors.
We would prefer products that are generally available in the USA.
Winning designs will be those that that achieve the desired functionality, and give a "wow factor" as this the first room people see when they enter our home.
