This project is to update a 1950’s Midwestern ranch’s basement. The Basement was in the 1970s wood paneling style and wasn’t really being used but is in good condition and has electrical and heating. There is a central straight staircase which separates the basement in to 2 parts. There are also 2 large glass block windows in each part. I have a great contractor that I’ve worked with who updated my kitchen last year. He is working in the basement now and has already taken the basement down to the studs and is working on adding a full bath to the basement including a whirlpool tub in one part of the basement. A small area will remain open. The basement has lots of shelving in the room with the HVAC system . And a washer/dryer is also in the basement and will remain.
Where I’m having most problems is in the main area of the basement remodel and how to make a combination entertainment area plus keep an area for my many crafts which are presently in the living room (sewing including several machines, jewelry metalsmith work. I would like or need a storage solution so that all can be put away and not be in sight. I also have quite a few books and would like to have space for them.
I have several items in mind, that I’d like to add including a wide screen TV, 32” Fireplace and small sink and refrigerator. Also, I’m not sure how to incorporate both the fireplace and TV. The main wall the contractor and I were thinking of to put the TV was next to the storage room so you could have easy access. But then I’m not sure how to put in the fireplace so you can have easy access but not look strange since they are both focal points. Usually for TVs I don’t like to see wires
There are no small children in the homes but small pets and a messy homeowner (me) so where as I like comfort, not if it needs lots of maintenance. I’d consider my style contemporary. The room will be used for family entertaining . Occasionally, I have had the drain lines back up so no carpet in the basement (we are updating sump & sewer lines were updated). Rugs are ok.
The central stairs have been opened up and so are “floating”. Since those were just recently replaced those can’t be changed, though we they aren’t finished so would like ideas for this. Also, I’m looking for a creative way to add a banister but still give an open look.
The basement does appear a bit dark (ceilings are ~ 7' finished height).so any design that helps lighten up the basement while giving a cozy comfortable feel would be appealing.
